Increasing relevance of Arctic Council.


Due to melting of ice in Arctic, new waterways are becoming accessible in the region. Not only this, energy resources can also be tapped now.
So, there is conflict between the member countries to exploit the energy & mineral resources.

What is Arctic Council?

It is an inter-governmental forum. It looks after the concerns of the indigenous people of Arctic & the issues of Arctic governments.

Member Countries of Arctic Council.

There are 8 Member Countries:

Canada,

Denmark,

Finland,

Iceland,

Norway,

Russia,

Sweden,

& USA

Role of India:

India is one of the Observer country of the Arctic Council.

An observer country does not have a voting rights & therefore India does not have a voting right in Arctic Council.
