Why India is pushing for Methanol Economy.
Background: India relies on fossil fuels & petroleum for 80-90% of its energy requirements.
Not only they are not clean fuel but India also has to spend foreign currency to import oil.
Can Methanol serve as an alternative?
Methanol or methyl alcohol is simplest form of alcohol.
It has no carbon-carbon bond. Hence, it does not emits PM (Particulate Matter). Therefore, a clean fuel.
Waste Management: Methanol can be produced from renewable resources like:
¬ forest residue
¬ agricultural waste
¬ Biomass waste, etc.
Hence, can be used in disposal of waste.
Will engines in vehicles would need to be modified?
Only minor modifications are needed. In fact, no change us required if Methanol used with gasoline is 15%.
P. S. NITI Aayog is preparing a Draft Road map on Methanol Economy.
