What are the problems with dams?

There are many pros of multi-purpose dam projects like hydro-electricity, provision of irrigation & drinking water, etc.

Dams submerge nearby areas & hence large number of people are displaced. The record of rehabilitation & resettlement of the displaced & giving them compensation for their lands has been poor.

Silting of the dams pose a problem. The dams need to be desilted on a regular basis. It reduces water storage capacity, which in turn affects the ability to produce hydro-electricity. A dam suffering from silting leads to situations of flooding in the backwaters.

#Loss of biodiversity

The dams check the flow of water & this leads to decreased flow of freshwater to the estuary (where river meets the sea) which makes the estuaries saline. Salinity is dangerous for biodiversity & marine ecosystem.

Given the mass displacement of people & the environmental concerns, it is not hard to imagine why there was a mass movement like Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) aka Save Narmada Movement against Sardar Sarovar Dam (SSD).
